Analysis: A careful analysis of the existing workshop was undertaken. Though this existing premises were much smaller than the new building being proposed, it was important for us to understand the specific requirements of the technicians within this space, given their highly specialised work. Detailed notes were taken, and a reverse brief was returned to the client to ensure the brief's requirements were encapsulated correctly.

    Solution:

Workshop: The workshop is the engine room of the Matamata panel works business. With high volumes of cars continuously coming in and out of the workshop and many technicians working within this space, it was essential that we planned for equipment and fixed workspaces within our lighting design to minimise shadowing in working areas.

High-bay luminaires were selected as the primary light source throughout this space. These powerful luminaires offer even illumination and would ensure that every corner could be well-lit, reducing the unwanted shadowing that existed in their previous workshop. Technicians are now able to work with pinpoint accuracy on car detailing.

We chose circular “UFO” style high bays due to their easier installation over their linear style cousins. They are lightweight and offer a high lumen efficacy, reducing power consumption while providing more light output than was previously emitted in the old workshop lighting. The combination of installation and power savings enabled the owner to invest in other business areas.

The selected correlated colour temperature of the workshop lighting was also fine-tuned.  Working in collaboration with the Matamata Panel Works, the high bays were set to a 5000K correlated colour temperature to optimise paint visibility and ensure superior natural colour rendition. This is particularly significant for tasks that demand precise colour and finish differentiation, guaranteeing that every job achieves perfection.

Showroom & Offices: The showroom and office spaces boast a chic industrial design style.  Various lighting fixtures were combined in these spaces to create an inviting environment that showcased the cars in all their splendour and ensured a welcoming environment for both staff and visitors.

Due to the showroom's vast amount of natural light, careful consideration was given to this part of the lighting design to ensure that money was not wasted on unnecessary lighting. Spotlights were strategically placed around the showroom to highlight the cars on show. The precision beam angle of the spotlights and the control switches offered flexibility to adjust the lighting based on the natural light conditions at different times of the day and throughout the year, maximising visibility and presentation of the vehicles.

Circular ceilings and wall-mounted luminaires were used throughout the spaces to offset and enhance the dark hues in the interior design colour palette.

Linear pendants were used throughout the reception and office spaces, providing optimal light on the working plane and creating exciting shapes that complement the interior design vibe.
